About the Masai Mara
The name 'Masai Mara' honours the Maasai people who have lived in the region for centuries. When viewed from above, the landscape is dotted with their circular homesteads (bomas) and grazing livestock. The word 'Mara' itself means 'spotted' in the local Maa language, which aptly describes the landscape scattered with acacia trees, cloud shadows, and the vast herds of animals.
The reserve is managed by the local county government and is divided into the larger National Reserve and several adjoining private conservancies. These conservancies, owned by Maasai communities, have pioneered a sustainable model of tourism that directly benefits the local people while providing exclusive, low-impact safari experiences with activities not permitted in the main reserve.
